Des Rocs - Used to the Darkness

By Shereen Masoud-Jointe, Account Executive (Europe)

One of my favorite things about music is how much you can learn about an artist through their lyrics. Sometimes, they went to prison for refusing to become an informer. Sometimes, they were a drifter hitching a ride through the American South. Sometimes, they’re just obsessed with their dog. Guess which ones:

50.   Me and Bobby McGee — Janis Joplin

51.   Informer — Snow

52.   Chefs de Saudade — João Gilberto

53.   Man of the Hour — Norah Jones

54.   Used to the Darkness — Des Rocs

For her song choice, HA Korea General Manager Miranda Lee shared a Korean beverage commercial that was super successful — at least for NY rock musician Des Rocs.

“I’d like to introduce an upbeat rock song for the drive home from work on a Friday, or a weekend road trip. The song is called ‘Used to the Darkness’ by Danny Rocco, aka Des Rocs.

“According to AllAccess.com, the song is a pulse-pounding, vocally soul-filled, fuzz boxed tune about being lost.

“Des Rocs is not super famous and only made his debut in 2018; however, this song was used in a beer commercial in Korea and interested many Koreans including me. Here is the commercial clip starring Gong Yoo, who played the title role in the K-Drama, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (also known as Goblin in many countries). Thanks to the advertiser and Gong Yoo, I became acquainted with a remarkable song.”
