How did I get here?
If you had told me a year ago that I would be a tech PR intern at the Hoffman Agency, I would not have believed you.
At this time last year, I was a manager at ALO Yoga, fresh out of college, and wanted a big corporate job like the rest of my friends. The reality was that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life or where to start.
Now, I am one and a half years postgrad and starting my first full-time internship. This is how I got here:
First, if you feel behind, you are not.
We are all in our early careers and have different paths. Take your time and figure out what you are passionate about.
Second, pinpointing my interests was the most difficult part.
In college, I majored in history and political science with a minor in space in hopes of practicing law for NASA. However, over time and with internship experience, I became less passionate about law.
So during my senior year of college, I went back to the drawing board.
Once I graduated, I faced a period of uncertainty. The two questions I got most that year after graduation were “What are your plans for postgrad?” and “Have you found a job yet?” The anxiety of not knowing the answers to these questions made me feel like I was behind or not doing enough to secure a job.
Third, network and listen!
Learning how to navigate those difficult questions brought me here. By networking and having conversations with my connections in the PR industry, I landed my first internship at a fashion agency. I discovered my passion for writing, storytelling and being creative.
I also listened to myself. I always thought it was cliché to pursue a passion because it never seemed realistic. However, after learning more about myself and my interests through self-reflection, I realized that I could reach my goals and work in a field that I am passionate about.
Fast-forward to my first day at The Hoffman Agency.
Entering the professional world felt intimidating when having to learn new lingo, systems clients and names all at once. Although my first day felt overwhelming, The Hoffman Agency made me feel welcomed and has prepared me to take on any task.
As I start my career in public relations and my journey at The Hoffman Agency, I am most excited about learning new topics, taking on new accounts and being creative with my writing.
Outside of the office, I love golfing, climbing, hanging out with friends and traveling. I am also passionate about discussing anything history or political science related, playing with my Australian labradoodle, Daisy, or watching the San Jose Sharks hockey team. Overall, I am excited to start my PR journey and continue my growth at The Hoffman Agency.
